Creature Design – 100 Creatures

100 Creature Design concepts

Creature Design of the Week 100

Here was my entry into the ConceptArt.org Creature Design of the Week (COW) 100.  I would love to revisit that competition with all the knowledge I have gained from my nightly sketch sessions, it is my opinion that my creature design skills have significantly improved since then. Some of these creatures are okay, but the vast majority were literally thrown down last minute and lack an real believability.

Regardless I enjoyed the competition and am proud to have completed it, even if the end results are less than stellar. This was only my 3rd attempt at creature design ever.

Creature Design Lessons Learned

1) Start with a silhouette. Small silhouettes and make them interesting first. Then start adding white to develop details. once you have interesting creatures, start creating the depth with gray, and only after you have a fully rendered out creature in black and white do you add color. This should be my creature design process.

2) Do not initially worry about anatomy. It might not look like it in these images, as the anatomy is so screwed up on most of the creature designs, but that is because I was actually thinking about how they might work, while making the thumbnails. It is a complete waste of time. Make them interesting first, then figure out how to make them work in the detail phase.

3) Don’t sit down and try and come up with 100 creatures in a week. Your mind will melt. Try to do 3 a day or something more attainable.
