For me this page is made by the sketch in the upper left. A little kid with his lollipop and pet balloon creature, I mean, how cute is that?
This page came from late march 2009. And as per any page there is always the assortment of mis-steps and false starts, that are abandoned. Part of the process as far as I am concerned. I came up with another exercise that involves going back through pages that have nothing positive and drawing back into them, and trying to incorporate the abandoned images into a new and better whole.
Sometimes even these attempts fail. But on occasion it can work to marvelous effect. In this case I had the monster image in the upper left. No child, just the creature. I added to it several days later.
The monster balloon creature is me making fun of myself. I feel like a high percentage of my creature ideas look, bulbous. And this one in particular ended up looking like it was floating in the air. The umbilical cord and child were an afterthought, but by making fun of myself I think it gained something, the creature itself was lacking. So much so I am thinking of painting it. It follows on the alien doing laundry image from several months ago, in that both are funny, make light of their otherwise monstrous nature and are unexpected.
After all I try not to take myself too seriously.
