My wife and I were taking a long weekend in Gearhart Oregon (on the Oregon coast). It was stormy, which was fantastic. During the evenings while recuperating from playing on the beach in heavy winter storms, I sat down and sketched. This is one of the pages that came from that weekend.
Oddly enough it is not he main image that stands out as important to me. In fact it is the little tiny thumbnail on the bottom right. I’d be surprised if anyone else could make it out. What it represents is the basic layout for a painting I have been thinking about for months. A diver going too deep and getting the surprise of their life.
The main creature is a halfway point between a bird and a lizzard, with elements of both. I love how the colored pencils look on this paper, but it holds no other importance. And this is how it goes, something small and meaningless to most, is the most important image to me.
